Having read all the other books in this series, I was anticipating the release of this final book. Laughed my way through the first story introducing Jonty. Cried my way through the story of March, Caleb and Jasim (not part of this series but characters cross related) Each book in this series just got more compelling and grabbed me by the throat, held my breath and then released me with an explosive sense of satisfaction. Elsborg books are always well edited, throughly and accurately researched and sprinkled with an enjoyable dose of humor. Hope you read and enjoy this series as much as I did. I feel awful writing this review, because this author is one of my favorites. An automatic buy for me. I loved the other three books in this series, but I just couldn’t click with this one at all. The character development was weak, with no character feeling fully fleshed out. I pre-ordered this book and couldn’t wait for it. I wanted to love it. The plot was also a bit weak. There was so much being thrown into the pot that it was hard to focus for long on anything at all. Each event could be spotted coming from a mile away. There were credibility issues too. How does Ru have an Irish accent when he was completely isolated with only his aunt and uncle who weren’t Irish? There were so many loose ends with Ru’s parents & brother that, out of nowhere, were resolved at the end.And then….there was Jasim. As with the other characters, he felt very one-dimensional. But his past with Caleb put him in an extremely bad light that Ru never even had concerns about. The story would have survived without that added element or characters. Because it really only added a creepy vibe to Jasim, who should have been focusing more on the psychological reasons that Ru might have imprinted on him and how to widen Ru’s experiences so that Jasim would know he was Ru’s choice and not a lifeline for someone whose world essentially became frozen in time when he was eight. Ru was immature, which made sense. Jasim took advantage of Ru’s naïveté and desperation to be with his horses, but consoled himself by feeling bad about it without examining his motives too closely.The conflicts in this story happened around or to Jasim & Ru. I think the plot would have been strengthened if the conflicts had been between Jasim and Ru as they navigated their way to a more balanced, healthy relationship.I still love this author and I’ll still be pre-ordering books, but this one just didn’t do it for me. It was disappointing.
