I don’t know how anyone can give this book a high rating. This is no Talented Mr. Ripley, but it sure did try to be. The heist set up dragged on and on with dull background material, and wasn’t particularly unique or clever. Whatever...a couple of underachievers con a rich guy...which was ridiculous anyway because no one would drop $700K on someunauthenticated merchandise, even if he or she thought it was an amazing deal. I kept hoping the climax would be wellstructured and astonishing, but the ending was peculiar, unbelievable and abrupt. Lastly, say what you want, but personally I don’t want to hear gratuitous details of gay sex when there was absolutely no point in including this...it was as if these details were included to check off a box. Take a pass on this one. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel. I always wanted to read "just one more chapter," which is a sign of great read to me! I agree with those who compare the story and characters to Patricia Highsmith AND with those who remark upon the vivid world-building in Venice. It also has a whiff of Goldfinch about it (maybe it's the antique store aspect or the hint of old New York or the heist travel to Europe), but somehow I found myself absorbing and re-reading passages in a way that reminded me of my first time through the Goldfinch (which is one of my all-time favs). If you're looking for beautifully written prose with a tension-filled plot set in steamy Venice, this one is for you!
